Google Doodle recently honored a remarkable figure from India’s sports history: Hamida Banu, the nation’s pioneer in women’s professional wrestling. Her story is a testament to breaking barriers in a male-dominated sport during the 1940s and 50s.

In February 1954, Banu threw down a challenge to male wrestlers: “Beat me in a bout and I’ll marry you.” This bold move captured attention as she defeated two male champions, one from Punjab and another from Kolkata, proving her mettle in the ring.

Banu’s fame spread far and wide. Her visit to Vadodara drew immense excitement, with banners and posters heralding her arrival. She was dubbed the “Amazon of Aligarh” by newspapers, reflecting her formidable stature in the wrestling world.

One memorable match in May saw Banu facing Baba Pahalwan in Vadodara. Lasting just over a minute, she emerged victorious, prompting the referee to declare her opponent “out of her wedding range.”

What set Banu apart was not just her prowess in the ring but also her physical attributes and diet, which often made headlines. Standing at 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 108 kilograms, her daily regimen included an impressive array of food: gallons of milk, eggs, meat, and more.

Despite her triumphs, Banu faced challenges and opposition. In Pune, a scheduled match had to be canceled due to objections from local authorities. She even endured hostility from some fans, requiring police intervention to ensure her safety.

In 1954, Banu achieved a significant victory over Vera Chistilin, a renowned Russian wrestler, in Mumbai. She harbored ambitions of competing in Europe, but her coach, Salam Pahalwan, opposed the idea, leading to a strained relationship and allegations of mistreatment.

Banu’s personal life was fraught with difficulties, including allegations of abuse from her coach and conflicting accounts regarding her marital status. Despite these challenges, her legacy as India’s first woman wrestler remains an inspiring chapter in the nation’s sporting history.

Hamida Banu’s journey exemplifies courage, determination, and resilience in the face of adversity. Her pioneering spirit paved the way for future generations of female athletes, leaving an indelible mark on the world of Indian wrestling.
