Francis Scott Key Bridge: In a tragic incident, the cargo vessel “Dali” collided with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, resulting in its collapse into the river below. All 22 crew members, hailing from India, had expressed concerns about a power issue before the catastrophe unfolded.
Regrettably, six workers remain missing and are presumed deceased following the bridge collapse. Despite extensive search efforts by the US Coast Guard and Maryland State Police, harsh conditions forced a pause in rescue operations.
Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath conceded that the likelihood of finding survivors was slim due to the harsh environment and time elapsed since the accident. Maryland State Police Colonel Roland Butler disclosed plans to resume dive operations to recover the bodies.
The cargo ship “Dali,” under the Singapore flag, was managed by Synergy Marine Group and owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd. Laden with 4,679 TEUs, it was en route from Baltimore to Colombo. Fortunately, all crew, including two pilots, escaped unharmed.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore lauded the crew’s prompt Mayday call, preventing further traffic on the bridge and saving lives. President Joe Biden acknowledged their efforts, stating that their actions undoubtedly saved lives.
The Indian Embassy in the US extended condolences and set up a hotline for assistance. Investigations into the accident’s cause are underway, with initial findings suggesting it was an accident. Governor Moore declared a State of Emergency for crisis management.
The incident has disrupted Baltimore, especially the Port, raising concerns about maritime safety and infrastructure resilience. Maersk, the vessel charterer, expressed shock and pledged support. President Biden vowed federal aid for reconstruction.
The collision highlights the importance of maritime safety and infrastructure resilience. The aftermath will necessitate thorough inspections, repairs, and safety protocol revisions, impacting the community and transportation networks profoundly.
