In a significant development for Mumbai’s cinephiles, the iconic IMAX theatre at Wadala is set to make a comeback under the management of Miraj Cinemas. This move comes after the theatre’s closure last year left a void in the city’s movie scene.
The news was unveiled at the ComicCon 2024 exhibition conference in Las Vegas, where IMAX Corporation and Miraj Entertainment Limited announced their collaboration. As part of this partnership, three new IMAX with Laser systems will be installed across India, with Mumbai’s Wadala location being the first.
Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, expressed excitement about expanding their presence in India, citing the growing demand for premium cinematic experiences. Amit Sharma, Managing Director of Miraj Entertainment Limited, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the immersive nature of IMAX technology.
The decision to reopen the IMAX theatre at Wadala marks a significant milestone, especially considering its status as Mumbai’s oldest and most iconic cinema venue. Previously managed by Big Cinemas and Carnival Cinemas, the theatre’s revival under Miraj Cinemas is expected to rejuvenate the city’s movie culture.
The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from both moviegoers and industry insiders, who anticipate a return to the larger-than-life cinematic experiences that IMAX is known for. With plans to expand into non-metro cities, the partnership between IMAX and Miraj Cinemas promises to redefine the movie-watching experience across India.
