Thiruvananthapuram: Malayalam film director Harikumar, who passed away at a private hospital on Monday evening at the age of 70 after battling cancer.
Harikumar‘s illustrious career began in 1981 with his debut film “Ambal Poovu,” but it was his 1994 masterpiece “Sukurtham,” penned by renowned author M.T. Vasudevan Nair and starring Mammootty, that catapulted him to fame. The film garnered two National Awards, recognizing its excellence in Malayalam cinema and music direction.
Throughout his career, Harikumar directed a total of 16 films, with his final work being “Autorickshawkarente Bharya” (2022), written by the acclaimed author M. Mukundan. His contributions extended beyond directing, as he served on the jury for the National Film Awards in 2005 and 2008.
Condolences flooded in from across the industry, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressing deep sorrow over the loss. Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan praised Harikumar’s commitment to cinematic artistry, citing “Sukurtham” as a testament to his directorial prowess.
The funeral rites will be conducted on Tuesday evening, with the public having the opportunity to pay their respects before the final farewell.
