Over the past three decades, the Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency has been a stronghold for the YS family. Since YSR’s initial victory in 1989, they have consistently secured wins in every election.
Fast forward to 2024, and the Kadapa parliamentary segment witnessed an unexpected scenario with two YS family members in the fray: Congress president Sharmila and YCP’s Avinash Reddy.
Following the conclusion of polling, local discussions in Kadapa suggest a significant occurrence of cross-voting. It appears that a considerable portion of the core YSR voter base has thrown its support behind Sharmila this time.
While traditionally favoring Jagan’s YCP in the MLA elections, Kadapa voters seem to have intentionally backed Sharmila for the MP seat, as indicated by ground-level reports.
Factors such as the Viveka murder case and Sharmila’s direct lineage to YSR seem to have bolstered her candidacy. The prevailing trend suggests that the YS voter base in Kadapa may have adopted a strategy of splitting their votes between Jagan and Sharmila.
If indeed this cross-voting trend has materialized in the Kadapa parliamentary constituency, Sharmila stands a strong chance of securing a comfortable victory.
