EC: Stop Voter Registration for Welfare Schemes

ECI officials addressing the media on their decisive measures against post-poll violence in Andhra Pradesh.

The Central Election Commission has instructed political parties to halt the registration of individuals or voters for post-election welfare schemes. This directive applies to all national and state-level parties and encompasses registration activities conducted through advertisements, surveys, or apps.

This decision comes in light of the upcoming 2024 general elections. The Election Commission is concerned that promising post-election benefits could create false expectations among voters and candidates, undermining the integrity of the electoral process. Such promises may lead to compromises between voters and political parties.

Moreover, the Election Commission fears that registering voters in anticipation of welfare schemes may blur the line between genuine surveys and partisan efforts for political gain. While election promises are permissible, these activities may appear as legitimate government programs or party initiatives.

To address these issues, the Election Commission has instructed district election officials to take appropriate measures within the framework of existing rules.
