In Vijayawada West, the TDP has historically struggled to gain ground, with their last win dating back to 1983. Since then, it’s mostly been the CPM and Congress dominating the scene, except for a brief stint in 2009 when Vellampalli Srinivas clinched victory under the Prajarajyam banner. In the recent 2014 and 2019 elections, the YCP emerged victorious here.
Now, with the TDP, BJP, and JSP forming an alliance in AP, the tables might turn in Vijayawada. Their candidate, Sujana Chowdary, is not just financially strong but also has deep local connections. Many see him as a credible challenger to the ruling party. His resources and campaign skills could tilt the balance in their favor.
On the YCP front, there’s been a shuffle in candidates each term, from Jaleel Khan in 2014 to Vellampalli in 2019, and now Shaik Asif in 2024. This inconsistency might weaken their local grip and pave the way for a tough fight.
Adding to the mix, Janasena’s Pothina Mahesh, who garnered significant votes last time, has shifted allegiance to YCP. However, doubts linger whether his supporters voted for him or the party platform. Moreover, there’s a wave of anti-incumbency in the air.
Kesineni Nani, despite his move away from TDP, is determined to contribute to YCP’s victory in Vijayawada West. Yet, his influence remains uncertain.
In the end, it boils down to meticulous election management. Vijayawada West promises to be a nail-biter, with victory likely hanging on a slender margin. If Sujana Chowdary manages to clinch it, he’ll break a 40-year deadlock for the TDP camp; otherwise, it’s back to the drawing board.
