Early this morning, heavy rain caused a portion of the roof at Delhi’s Terminal 1 to collapse, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to six others. The incident also damaged four vehicles, including taxis.
All flights from Terminal 1, which serves domestic routes for IndiGo and SpiceJet, have been temporarily halted. The Civil Aviation Ministry announced that operations will shift to Terminals 2 and 3 for the time being.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visited the airport to assess the situation. He described the incident as “very serious” and promised a thorough investigation into the structural failure. He also announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh for the deceased’s family and ₹3 lakh for each injured person.
The roof fall apart caused significant problems for both IndiGo, and SpiceJet. IndiGo announced that travelers already inside Terminal 1 can board their flights, while those with later deviations will be given options. SpiceJet is canceling all flights departing Terminal 1 until additional notice.
Delhi has been experiencing excessive precipitation for the second day in a row, causing waterlogging and delays in traffic throughout the city. The Safdarjung Observatory documented 154 mm of rain between yesterday and this morning.
