Elon Musk has revealed a potential setback for new users on the X platform, stating they might incur fees for posting content. Responding to a user inquiry, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX expressed that implementing “a small fee for new user write access” could help combat the relentless influx of bots.
Elon Musk highlighted the ease with which current AI, along with troll farms, circumvent traditional bot detection methods. He emphasized that this flood of fake accounts not only complicates the platform’s namespace but also results in many desirable usernames being unavailable.
The billionaire clarified that the fee would exclusively apply to new users, allowing them to perform write actions without charge after a probationary period of three months. This strategy aligns with X’s recent initiatives to address spam and fraudulent accounts, including the implementation of a nominal fee for unverified users in select regions last year.
In the ongoing efforts to cleanse the platform of spam and pornographic bots, X recently initiated a significant purge, resulting in a reduction of followers for several users. Musk had previously announced the platform’s commitment to eradicating bots and trolls, although specific details regarding the current bot population remain undisclosed.
