New Delhi, January 28, 2024: Hockey India extended heartfelt congratulations to the veteran hockey icon Harbinder Singh on receiving the prestigious Padma Shri award. The legendary centre forward played a pivotal role in India’s Gold Medal triumph at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, scoring five goals in the final against Pakistan.
Harbinder Singh, who made his Olympic debut in 1964, showcased an illustrious career spanning from 1961 to 1972. His Olympic journey included winning a Gold Medal in 1964, a Bronze in the 1968 Mexico Olympics, and another Bronze in the 1972 Munich Olympics. His contributions extended beyond the Olympics, with India securing Gold in the 1966 Asian Games and a Silver in the 1970 edition.
Expressing joy at Harbinder Singh’s well-deserved recognition, Hockey India President Padma Shri Dr. Dilip Tirkey stated, “We are thrilled that Harbinder Singh has been honored with the Padma Shri for his outstanding hockey career.
