With this surge, the count of Indians in the World Top 20 has reached five. R Praggnanandhaa moved up one place to secure the 13th position, showcasing the consistent excellence of Indian chess players. Vidit Gujrathi maintained his stature at no. 14, contributing to India’s strong representation in the top echelons of global chess.
In the realm of women’s chess, GM Harika Dronavalli’s noteworthy performance at Tata Steel Challengers 2024 propelled her to World no. 11, marking her presence among the top-ranking female players globally. Notably, she gained 3.2 Elo rating points, reflecting her strategic prowess on the chessboard. Additionally, IM Divya Deshmukh, in her debut at the same event, earned a commendable 6.7 Elo rating points, securing the 38th position among Women in the world.
The overall achievement underscores India’s growing dominance in international chess, with a total of four Indian women now positioned in the World Top 40. The dynamic performances of these players, coupled with Gukesh’s remarkable climb, showcase the depth of talent and skill within the Indian chess community.
GM R Praggnanandhaa’s gain of 4.4 Elo rating points contributed to his ascent in the rankings, reaching World no. 13 and briefly holding the title of India no. 1 in live ratings.
