Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court invalidated the election of Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s (BRS) MLC Dande Vithal, responding to a petition filed by Congress leader P. Rajeshwar Reddy. The court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Vithal.
Vithal was elected from the Adilabad Local Authorities’ constituency in 2022, a candidacy that faced challenge due to allegations of forged signatures. Rajeshwar Reddy, formerly with BRS, contested independently after being denied a party ticket, alleging that Vithal had forged his withdrawal application.
After an investigation involving signatures sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory, the court pronounced the order, invalidating Vithal’s election. However, the implementation of the order was suspended for four weeks to allow Vithal to appeal. Despite this setback, Vithal intends to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court.
This ruling adds to the challenges faced by BRS ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on May 13. After losing power to Congress in the previous elections, BRS has witnessed a series of defections, further weakening its position in Telangana politics.
