Farmers protesting with banners and flags in Telangana, demanding bonuses for paddy crops.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) recently orchestrated widespread demonstrations throughout Telangana, urging the state’s Congress administration to fulfill its pledge of providing bonuses to farmers for their paddy crops, irrespective of their variety, a promise made during the Assembly elections.

Under the leadership of the party president and former chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, BRS leaders spearheaded these protests across all Assembly constituencies. Protesters, denouncing what they perceive as the government’s detrimental policies towards farmers, staged sit-ins on roads at various locations.

Their primary demands included the procurement of paddy at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the payment of a bonus of Rs. 500 per quintal, extending even to coarse rice varieties.

Accusations were levied against the Congress party, alleging a breach of trust after assuming power, contrary to their electoral assurances. Specifically, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy was singled out for reneging on the promised Rs. 500 bonus per quintal of paddy, restricting it to select varieties post-elections.

Chandrashekar Rao, urging BRS members to mobilize statewide protests, condemned the government’s backtrack on its commitment to provide bonuses to all farmers, labeling it as a betrayal of trust.

Highlighting the delayed disbursement of Rythu Bandhu funds and the perceived indifference towards farmers’ grievances, KCR asserted that the Congress government’s actions have left farmers feeling deceived and neglected.

Emphasizing the predominance of coarse rice cultivation in Telangana and accusing the Congress of exploiting farmers for political advantage, KCR underscored the need for genuine support and fulfillment of electoral promises.

Furthermore, he criticized the government’s failure to effectively implement agricultural support schemes, such as Rythu Bandhu and Rythu Bharosa, initiated during the BRS’s tenure.

Echoing the party’s dedication to championing farmers’ rights, BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao urged the expeditious procurement of paddy, especially considering the ongoing harvest and farmers’ anticipation of timely procurement.

In light of farmers’ protests statewide and concerns regarding the procurement process, Rama Rao emphasized the necessity for immediate action from the government, ensuring fair treatment and timely procurement, even accounting for rain-soaked produce.

Affirming solidarity with farmers until their demands are met, KTR reiterated the BRS’s unwavering commitment to advocating for farmers’ welfare and ensuring just treatment in agricultural policies and practices.
