Zakia Wardak, a senior Afghan diplomat in India, has resigned after being accused of smuggling gold from Dubai. There were reports that stated that she was caught last month in Mumbai with 25 kg of gold worth Rs 18.6 crore from UAE.
Wardak had been serving as the acting Ambassador of Afghanistan to New Delhi since the end of last year having previously worked for over two years as the Afghan Consul General in Mumbai. In her statement she said that she had been subjected to many personal attacks and defamations which hindered her work as a diplomat but did not mention anything about DRI seizing gold on April 25th.
She still has diplomatic immunity so arrest is not possible however this is why she tendered her resignation because there have been “persistent” and “orchestrated” attacks made against both herself and family members. She highlighted some challenges faced by women working towards modernisation within afghan society against a backdrop of propaganda campaigns.
While reiterating commitment to serve the nation, Wardak mentioned taking care of herself first considering hostile environment around her. She also expressed gratitude towards Indian government officials who supported her during service while hoping that future generations will respect women leaders more than they do now.
