In the bustling political scene of Andhra Pradesh elections, the upcoming simultaneous elections to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Lok Sabha witness the participation of several prominent multimillionaires. Leading this affluent cohort is Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate for the Guntur Lok Sabha constituency. Boasting family assets exceeding an impressive Rs. 5,705 crore, Chandra Sekhar is poised to potentially become the wealthiest candidate in the country.

A distinguished figure in both the medical and business sectors, Chandra Sekhar is an NRI medical professional and serves as the Founder and CEO of ‘UWorld’. His venture into electoral politics marks a significant transition in his career trajectory. Originally from Burripalem village in Guntur district, Chandra Sekhar embarked on his medical journey by completing his MBBS from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad in 1999 before relocating to the United States for further studies.

In the US, Chandra Sekhar pursued advanced medical education, culminating in an M.D. in internal medicine from Geisinger Medical Centre in Danville, Pennsylvania. Subsequently, he assumed a faculty position at Johns Hopkins University while continuing his medical practice. Now, at 48 years old, he ventures into politics with a vision to serve his community in a new capacity.

The political arena in Andhra Pradesh is buzzing with fervor as elections for the 175-member Assembly and all 25 Lok Sabha seats loom large. Among the contenders, a conspicuous trend emerges – a notable influx of affluent candidates, many affiliated with the TDP. This cadre encompasses seasoned politicians as well as industrialists, businessmen, and actors.

N. Chandrababu Naidu, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and the incumbent president of the TDP, is eyeing re-election from the Kuppam Assembly constituency in Chittoor district. Joining him in the electoral fray is his son and TDP general secretary, Nara Lokesh, who declares family assets amounting to Rs. 542 crore. Similarly, Naidu’s brother-in-law and renowned Tollywood actor, N. Balakrishna, seeks re-election for the Assembly from Hindupur for a third consecutive term.

Beyond the TDP, a diverse array of wealthy candidates emerges from other political parties. Notable among them is Lokam Naga Madhavi, representing the Jana Sena Party, who discloses family assets valued at Rs. 898.73 crore. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy of the YSR Congress Party emerges as one of the richest candidates, with declared family assets totaling Rs. 757.65 crore.

As the electoral campaign intensifies, the presence of affluent candidates underscores the intricate socio-economic tapestry of Andhra Pradesh. It underscores the amalgamation of wealth and influence, shaping the political discourse and aspirations of the electorate. In this vibrant landscape, candidates vie not only for votes but also for the opportunity to wield significant impact on the trajectory of the state’s future.
