Political career:

Vijaya Rama Rao entered politics in 1984 through the Telugu Desam Party . He contested the 1984 parliamentary elections on behalf of the TDP from the Siddipet Lok Sabha constituency and was elected MP to the 8th Lok Sabha by winning with a majority of 14201 votes over his closest rival , the Congress candidate Nandi Ellaiah .  He contested the parliamentary elections in 1989 and lost to Congress candidate Nandi Ellaiah by 86,837 votes, in 1991 by 115,262 votes and in 1996 by 87,967 votes.

Vijaya Rama Rao joined the Telangana Rashtra Samithi Party at the birth of the party in 2001 in Hyderabad Jaldarshan during the Telangana movement . He contested the 2004 Andhra Pradesh Assembly election from Station Ghanpur constituency as a Telangana Rashtra Samithi candidate as part of the Congress and TRS alliance and won with a majority of 19720 votes over his nearest rival Telugu Desam Party candidate Kadiam Srihari ,  Y.S. He worked as a minister in Rajasekhara Reddy’s cabinet. He was a member of TRS Party Politburo and served in various capacities in the party. Vijarama Rao resigned from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi on August 8, 2013 and joined the Congress party. He contested the 2014 Telangana Assembly elections on behalf of the Congress Party and lost to TRS candidate T. Rajaiah by a margin of 58829 votes.  He resigned from the Congress Party in 2015 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and is currently the state vice-president of the BJP.
