He joined the Congress party. Rajaiah won over Kadiyam Srihari in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Elections in 2009 from the Congress party. He Resigned on 28.11.2011 and Re-elected on 21.03.2012.
Rajaiah, a prominent figure in Telangana politics, joined the Indian National Congress in 1997. In the 2009 Andhra Pradesh State Assembly Elections, he secured a victory in the Station Ghanpur Assembly constituency as a Congress party representative, defeating Kadiyam Srihari. However, in 2011, Rajaiah resigned from his MLA position and left the Congress party to support the separate Telangana state movement, subsequently joining the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party in October 2011. In the 2012 by-elections, he won again as a TRS candidate, with Kadiyam Srihari as his opponent from the Telugu Desam Party. Following the formation of Telangana state in 2014, he won the Station Ghanpur constituency once more, securing his place as Deputy Chief Minister in the first K. Chandrashekar Rao ministry. However, he was removed from this position in January 2015 due to concerns about his performance and handling of the swine flu situation in Telangana.
Continuing his political journey, Rajaiah achieved a fourth consecutive victory in the 2018 assembly elections in Station Ghanpur. In a recent development on October 5, 2023, Thatikonda Rajaiah was appointed as the chairman of the Rythu Bandhu Samithi after being denied an MLA ticket from his party for the upcoming 2023 Telangana Legislative Assembly Elections. This appointment represents a new chapter in his political career, marking his continued engagement in Telangana politics.
