    Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) is the first Chief Minister of Telangana, which became a separate state from Andhra Pradesh. He leads the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. Currently, he’s an MLA representing Gajwel.

    KCR started his political journey with the Youth Congress, later joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), but resigned in 2001 to advocate for a separate Telangana state. He founded the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in 2001.

    KCR’s dedication to the Telangana cause led him to resign from the Union Cabinet in 2006 and stage hunger strikes for the state’s formation. The movement’s success came in 2009 when the Indian government announced the initiation of the process for Telangana’s formation.

    Early life:

    Chintamadaka village, located near Siddipet in what was once Hyderabad State but is now part of Telangana, is where Chandrashekar Rao was born. He hails from the Padmanayaka Velama community and comes from a family of 11 siblings, including 9 sisters and an elder brother. He earned his Master’s degree in Telugu literature from Osmania University in Hyderabad.

    Political career:

  • Youth Congress Beginnings: Rao initiated his political journey with the Youth Congress Party in Medak district.
  • Telugu Desam Party Affiliation: In 1983, Rao joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and contested an election against A. Madan Mohan, though he faced defeat. He later secured four consecutive Assembly election victories from Siddipet between 1985 and 1999. During this time, from 1987 to 1988, he served as the Minister of Drought & Relief in Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao’s cabinet. In 1990, he took on the role of TDP convener for Medak, Nizamabad, and Adilabad districts. In 1996, he assumed the position of Transport Minister in Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s cabinet. Additionally, he held the office of Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from 2000 to 2001.

    Rao is married to Shobha and they have two children. His son, K. T. Rama Rao, currently serves as a legislator representing Sircilla and holds the position of Cabinet Minister for IT, Municipal Administration & Urban Development. His daughter, Kavitha, previously served as a Member of Parliament from Nizamabad and has been a Member of the Legislative Council, Nizamabad, since 2020. Additionally, his nephew, Harish Rao, holds the position of MLA for Siddipet and is the Cabinet Minister for Finance in Telangana. Rao is proficient in several languages, including Telugu, English, Urdu, and Hindi. The family resides at the official chief minister residence, Pragathi Bhavan in Hyderabad.

    In 2015, Rao adopted Pratyusha, who was a survivor of domestic violence. She subsequently got married in 2020.
