A recent shooting incident at the residence of Simranjeet Singh, a friend of Khalistan separatist and Khalistan Tiger Force chief Hardeep Singh Nijjar, has sparked controversy in Canada. Local authorities, specifically the Surrey Royal Canadian Mounted Police, are actively investigating the incident, which occurred around 1:20 a.m. local time on Thursday near the 2800 block of 154th Street.
According to reports by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), gunshots were fired at Simranjeet Singh’s house, resulting in damage to a car and several bullet holes in the property. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Simranjeet Singh was a close associate of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed the previous year.
Corporal Sarbjit Sangha stated that law enforcement officers are currently in the area, engaging with locals, interviewing witnesses, and examining CCTV footage to gather more information about the incident. The investigation is still in its early stages, and authorities are exploring various angles to determine the identity of the perpetrator(s).
There is speculation that the shooting may be linked to Simranjeet Singh’s association with Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Moninder Singh, a representative of the British Columbia Council of Gurdwaras, mentioned that the house had been targeted a few days after a pro-Khalistan protest at the Indian Consulate in Vancouver on January 26.
The strained relationship between India and Canada following Nijjar’s murder adds complexity to the situation. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comments implying Indian involvement in Nijjar’s murder have led to diplomatic tensions between the two nations, resulting in the expulsion of diplomats. The investigation into the recent shooting continues, and authorities are diligently exploring all leads.
