India became the top country sending the most students to the United States, overtaking China for the first time in over a decade. This news comes from the Open Doors Report, a study by the Institute of International Education and the U.S. government. The report, which came out on Monday, reveals that more Indian students than ever before are heading to the U.S. for higher education, marking three years of consecutive growth.
The report shows a big jump of 35% in the number of Indian students studying in the U.S., reaching a record high of 268,923 in the academic year 2022–23. These students make up over a quarter of all international students in the U.S. The U.S. Embassy in India shared that there’s been a 63% rise in Indian graduate students and a 16% increase in undergraduates compared to last year.
Additionally, around 69,062 Indian students went for practical training in fields related to their studies. The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India issued a record number of student visas during June-August 2023, with a significant 18% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
Eric Garcetti, the U.S. Ambassador to India, praised Indian students for bridging the gap between both nations. He highlighted the quality of education in India, hoping to maintain a balance by encouraging more women to study in the U.S. and welcoming more American students to explore the opportunities in India.
