LG Polymers Gas Leak in Visakhapatnam

The footages were disturbing from Vizag after the tragic chemical gas leakage from a plant. The incident occurred at LG Polymers industry located in RR Venkatapuram. Health workers immediately attended the affected people who were lying on the road. Even children were seen lying on the road struggling to breathe. The leakage impacted not only the humans but the beasts as well. Buffaloes, cows, and other pets were seen lying on the road struggling to breathe.

What Does Styrene Gas Do?

According to the US-based Environment Protection Agency (EPA), the risk of getting exposed to the gas can cause respiratory problems. Irritation in mucous membranes and eyes is very common. There are also issues related to gastro intestine. There is a study that exposure to Styrene could lead to lymphoma and leukemia. It also affects the nervous system and leads to peripheral neuropathy.

The Styrene leak killed almost 11 people and 150 families living in 3 km radius had to be evacuated. The leakage took place at 3 am and two storage tanks of 2000 metric tonnes were leaked. The pungent smell of the gas spread around the area and people started suffocating. Police intervention was quick and people in proximity were alerted and moved to a safer place.

Around 5:30 AM the company staff stopped the leakage and the situation was normal. However, the damage was done and many people were rushed to the King George Hospital. These are indeed tough times and the hospital staff is overburdened because of the Covid-19 cases.

Prime Minister had called the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh to enquire about the mishap. There is already a review meeting and the root cause is investigated. The enquiry would confirm if this incident is the reminiscence of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
