Is Work From Home, New Normal?Jun 14, 2020 04:56 AM
We all know that IT and other knowledge workers have been working from home in the last few months. Every company’s CEO including that of Facebook, Microsoft, TCS etc., had their own take on it. Is working from home a new way of life? If yes, how is it going to change the way things are done now?
Companies will look to hire from across geographies. This was expressed by Mark Zuckerberg in a recent circular. Mark Zuckerberg expressed confidence Facebook can look forward to hiring in cities outside the cities where it has no development centers. So for engineers looking forward to working from their home town, or want to save the enormous expenses of a big city, this should be a boon. Says Bhanu Kalyan an IT developer,” My wife and myself used to work in 2 different cities. Being able to stay close to my family is the biggest perk of it.”
There are issues related to working from home too. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, had pointed out there might be psychological affects of working from home . Traditionally offices have been places to network, make new friends. Sense of community is a big motivator for a lot of people. Also, sticking to a laptop in our homes, where we may not have separate place for work can be a nightmare. Work places are neatly planned for productivity and unwinding.
May be going forward most building complexes should have some space reserved for work. Or this is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to set up WFH spaces in interiors. Companies like TCS believe this is a long term strategy even in post corona world. So we are walking into a future where there will be a balance between working from home and working from office.
