The decision was unveiled at the eleventh hour, adding a twist to the electoral strategy. While many anticipated Rahul’s return to Amethi, the party opted for a different path. Kishori Lal Sharma, a trusted loyalist of the Gandhi family, will now represent Congress in Amethi.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, despite her long association with Rae Bareli, declined to contest from there. Instead, she extended her congratulations to Kishori Lal Sharma, praising his dedication to public service.
Following the nomination, Rahul Gandhi is set to embark on a grand roadshow, joined by senior leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge.
The switch in Rahul Gandhi’s constituency has raised concerns about BJP’s advantage, particularly with Smriti Irani, the Union Minister, defending her victory in Amethi since 2019. Irani has dismissed Congress’s delay as a sign of apprehension about her impending triumph.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s decision not to contest further complicates matters for the Congress. There are fears within the party that this move could be perceived negatively and impact the overall election outcome, especially since Congress is contesting on 330 seats out of the remaining 353.
Vadra’s reluctance seems rooted in the potential reinforcement of BJP’s allegations of dynasty politics if all three Gandhi family members were to be in parliament simultaneously. Sonia Gandhi is already in the Rajya Sabha, and Rahul Gandhi contested from Wayanad, Kerala, in the previous election.
Rahul Gandhi’s victory in both Rae Bareli and Wayanad could pose a dilemma for the party, as he would need to vacate one of the seats. However, this challenge is something Congress will tackle at a later date.
