Attack on Rahul Gandhi Vehicle: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra faced a tumultuous turn in North Bengal’s Malda when his vehicle was allegedly attacked. The incident, near Dewangunj, resulted in the rear glass breaking after a stone was thrown.
While state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury refrained from naming the attackers, he hinted at clarity on the responsible party. Tensions between Congress and Trinamul escalated when Mamata Banerjee decided to go solo in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The yatra, covering 523 km across West Bengal, encountered challenges in Cooch Behar, including torn posters and an alleged denial of permission for hosting Gandhi at the state guest house.
The journey, initiated in Manipur on January 14, aims to cover 6,713 km in 67 days, traversing 110 districts in 15 states, before culminating in Mumbai on March 20. The second leg of the yatra, covering Malda, Murshidabad, and parts of Birbhum before moving to Jharkhand, has faced obstacles, echoing issues encountered in BJP-ruled states like Assam and Manipur.
Congress leaders cited challenges in securing permission for public meetings and lodging arrangements in TMC-ruled Bengal, still an ally at the national level.
Despite these hurdles, the yatra through North Bengal, once a Congress stronghold, has been greeted with enthusiasm as Gandhi interacts with locals along the route.
The incident in Malda adds to the political drama surrounding the yatra, creating further ripples in the already strained relationship between Congress and Trinamul. The yatra’s continuation will be closely monitored as it progresses through Murshidabad and the subsequent phases, addressing challenges in public engagement and organizational logistics amid the evolving political landscape in West Bengal.
